About us - the "fairytale house"

Lauvlia opened as a museum in 1995 and today stands as the most personal memorial to Th. Kittelsen. Extensive restoration work has been done to restore Lauvlia as authentically as possible to the way it looked when the Kittelsen family lived here. According to records from the family (and Inga's preserved receipts), colors and original furniture have been restored - supplemented with contemporary fixtures. Both inside and out, we still see Kittelsen's own carvings and painted motifs. Lauvlia also displays a large collection of Kittelsen's sketches.

Everyone who visits Lauvlia gets a personal tour of the artist's home with one of our skilled facilitators. We also have several activities for children. The family's storehouse and chicken coop have been converted into the Children's House, where children of all ages can paint with a view of Kittelsen's beloved motif, "Andersnatten". On the Children's Path, imagination can run wild through Tom Berre's sculptures that draw you into Kittelsen's world. The path leads up to Lauvlia's own troll castle and amphitheater.

As a guest at Lauvlia, you will be taken on a journey through time into Kittelsen's diverse artistry and unique ability to bring everything he saw and experienced around him to life.

Welcome to an adventurous visit!

Olavsrosa

In 2016, Lauvlia was awarded the Olavsrosa by the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Olavsrosa is a quality mark for experience offerings based on Norwegian cultural heritage. The owners of Olavsrosa are committed to being good ambassadors for a living cultural heritage and to convey history to their guests. The Olavsrosa symbol itself is based on the Valknut - an old symbol for protection, which is found both in Norway and abroad.
