Full Steam Ahead!

  • Thea Hermansen |

Full Steam Ahead tells the story of Krøderbanen, allowing visitors to learn and discover how a steam locomotive works and to try their hand as telegraph operators. Full Steam Ahead invites visitors to see, hear, and touch. The exhibition is open to all age groups and encourages exploration and learning both with friends and family, and on one’s own.

The exhibition tells stories of different people, and how the railway impacted their lives. The railway created many new opportunities for the communities close to it. It brought industrialisation, and greater mobilisation. When Krøderbanen closed down, the industries had left, and cars and buses had replaced the trains. This whole story is told in the exhibition, with both personal anecdotes, historical photographs, and interactive elements.

Full Steam Ahead is a new exhibition which, with the heritage railway, showcases the development of local and regional railway operations and transport history. It will be a new attraction for Krøderen, and we hope it will attract bus tour groups, cabin visitors, and, of course, the local community.

The exhibition also gives us the opportunity to develop more educational programs for local schools. It covers a wide range of topics and can be used in teaching social studies, science, mathematics, and English — and of course, in interdisciplinary learning. The steam locomotive and the telegraph are historical artifacts that can also be used to explore scientific topics, mathematics, and physics. The exhibition will be a space of opportunity for schools, from primary through upper secondary level.
