Hallingdal Museum Nesbyen is a large open-air museum with a long history, where you can explore buildings and exhibitions that represent Hallingdal's history spanning several centuries. Our oldest building is Staveloftet from Ål, built around 1340. We also have several houses painted in the traditional rose-painting style, different types of farm buildings, and industrial structures. On a guided tour, one of our skilled museum hosts will bring old traditions to life and tell stories about rural life 200-300 years ago.
The open-air museum is a beautiful place to visit year-round, located along the Rukkedøla River. The outdoor area is open to all outside regular opening hours, and guided group tours can be arranged by appointment outside of the main season. Hallingdal Museum Nesbyen is our main museum, where you will find our main building with offices, a shop, museum exhibitions, as well as the open-air museum. We hope you have a pleasant visit with us!
Throughout the year, we host various themed events at the museum, including the traditional autumn festival Markens Grøde in October and the Christmas event Jul på Museet in late November/early December. Every Wednesday from July to early August, we have activity days at the museum, where old craft traditions are demonstrated in the buildings and around the museum grounds.
