Gol Bygdemuseum is an open-air museum beautifully situated in the sloping mountainside near Gol town centre. Here you will find many historic buildings reflecting Gol and Hallingdal’s more recent history. The museum was originally an old farm called Skaga and is now one of the oldest farms in Gol still standing today. The last farmer at Skaga sold the farm to Hallingdal Høgskulelag, who built a folk high school here in 1958. The old farmstead Skaga was turned into a museum – including the main house, storage loft, storehouse, barn, stables with hayloft, cookhouse, and sheds. The museum was later expanded with a sauna (from Trondsgard), a mill house (from Brennhovd), a mountain dairy hut with a barn (from Turhusvollen at Habbeset), a hayloft (from Sjauset), and the old schoolhouse from Grønlio. Most of the buildings date from the 19th century, with the loft dating back to 1750. The museum today consists of two areas, situated next to each other with a small path in between.
In the summer season you can visit our museum with a museum guide, who will give you a tour of the buildings. Outside of these hours the museum is free to visit and provides a beautiful outdoor experience. We can also arrange guided tours for larger groups outside of our opening hours. Contact us to arrange a guided tour.
There is a small parking lot by the museum, but you can also walk from the centre of Gol. This will take roughly 30 minutes uphill.
